Welcome
I am a registered Psychologist with 15 years of experience. I began as a social worker. Much of what I did involved assessing at risk children in their homes. It wasn't hard to see that many problems that adults have originate in their childhood. I became a Psychologist so that I could be more effective in repairing the damage done in these early years. I have also been in positions of leadership, when I managed mental health care for 166,000 people in Auckland, and was responsible for the quality of mental health care for the population, as well as having my own team of Psychologists.
In our first meeting, I take the time to get a full understanding of how difficulties have developed, as often they originate in childhood. I then go over a treatment plan that explains how these difficulties will be resolved. I work collaboratively, getting input from you and making sure you are fully heard. My experience of therapy is that it is transformative, enabling change from suffering to a life of wellbeing.
I am intersted in the kind of trauma that people talk about when they talk of a difficult childhood. There may be identifiable abuse, neglect or maltreatment. But often, because our childhood is the only one we have known, it seems normal to us. So I look for other signs signs that the past has been difficult; such as dissociation, emotional numbness, chronic entrenched problems, emotional difficulties, anger, anxiety and depression.
The therapies I use, like EMDR for example, are very powerful, and can repair and heal the whole personality, allowing new hope and a chance for a new life. I also use Schema Therapy, DBT, CBT, Mindfulness-based Therapies, and Relapse Prevention (for Addictions). All the interventions I use have an excellent evidence-base for effectiveness.
I was based in medical school to do my postgraduate study, and have a clinical specialisation in health. I found that people who had endured significant emotional suffering tended to be vulnerable to chronic illness. Once psychological and emotional blocks are cleared, the body can better heal itself or respond to interventions.
